HOUSTON--Honored for his work off the baseball field, University of Houston senior right-handed pitcher Jared Ray was honored Monday for his off-the-field success when he was named to the Conference USA Baseball All-Academic Team.

Ray, a native of Waco, Texas, was one of 11 baseball players from across the league selected to this team. Earning a degree in Psychology this May, Ray earned a cumulative GPA of 3.44.

He was joined on the team with ECU's Drew Reynolds, Memphis' Ethan Gross, Dan Langfield, and Sam Moll, Rice's Jeremy Rathjen and Matthew Reckling, Southern Miss' Michael Sterling, Tulane's Brandon Boudreaux and Jeremy Schaffer, and UAB's Keith DePew and Ryan Nance.

Ray was a five-time Commissioner's Honor Roll selection, while being named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, a College Baseball 360 Primetime Performer in March and to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team.

He helped Houston Baseball to a record-high Spring team GPA of 3.15 and fourth straight semester of at least a 3.00 under second-year head coach Todd Whitting. 27 Cougars earned at least a 3.00 this Spring.

Houston will head to Pearl, Mississippi to take part in the C-USA Championship. Play will begin on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against top-seeded Rice. The Cougars will then take on Southern Miss on Thursday at 3 p.m. and Memphis on Friday at 7 p.m.
