Volleyball Trio Honored By Conference USA
Nov. 13, 2012
Serley, a senior, was named to the First Team All-C-USA for the second consecutive season, while junior Rachel Fairbanks and redshirt-freshman Sam Skinner each received a nod on the second team all-conference. In addition, Skinner was one of six players named to the all-freshman team and was the only freshman in the league named to either the first or second all-league squads.
Sam Serley, Sr., MB
Most recently, Serley reset the UAB record book, swatting her 548th block against Southern Miss over the weekend to break a record that was set back in 1992. She is just five blocks shy of resetting the single season record for blocks in a season. She also sits fourth all-time in C-USA with 550 career blocks.
Furthermore, Serley is just the second player in UAB history to reach both 1,000 kills and 500 blocks in a career.
Rachel Fairbanks, Jr., L
Fairbanks has flourished in the back row in her first year as the UAB libero. She finished second overall in C-USA in digs per set, averaging an even five and totaling 615 digs in 123 sets of game action.
The Katy, Texas native posted seven matches of 25-plus digs and committed just five reception errors in conference play. In addition, Fairbanks ranked 15th in aces per set (0.22).
Entering the C-USA Tournament, Fairbanks is just 17 digs shy of breaking Heather Thomas’ single-season digs record of 631, set last season. Fairbanks is only the second player in school history to eclipse 600 digs in a season.
Fairbanks was also awarded the league’s defensive player of the week award on two occasions this season.
