C-USA VOLLEYBALL SHOOTING STARS (Fri., Sept. 4)
· Marshall head coach Mitch Jacob will be going for his 150th Herd win Saturday against Davidson as part of the High Point Classic.
· Both Tulane and UCF will be facing AVCA Top 25 programs Saturday as the Green Wave takes on No. 6 Nebraska and the Knights face No. 24 Purdue in tournament action.
· Jenn McClean had a match-high 19 kills with 10 digs and Ashleigh McCord and Natalie Bogan followed with 15 and 14 kills respectively to lead Rice to a 3-2 victory over San Diego State at the USF/Asics Challenge. Setter Meredith Schamun had a match-high 48 assists and Tracey Lam had 20 digs. For McClean, it was her second double-double of the season.
· Sophomore outside hitter Visnja Djurdjevic had a double-double with 15 kills and 19 digs, and senior libero Jenn Miller posted a match-best 22 digs, as Tulane opened the 2009 season with a 3-0 win over Louisiana-Lafayette Friday evening in day one of the Tiger Classic at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
· Seniors Amy Sanders, 14, and Catherine Chavez, 11 led UTEP (4-0) to a sweep over Idaho State in the opening match of the ASU Sheraton Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Chavez was one dig short from a double-digit, posting nine digs. With the win the Miners go to 4-0 and became the first team in program history to begin the year with 12-consecutive set wins.
· Senior Kendra Kahanek led SMU (3-2) with 12 kills, while sophomore Dana Powell added 11 kills and seven digs as the Mustangs defeated Jacksonville State, 3-0, to open the Bama Bash. Sophomore Kelli Becerra assisted on 36 of the Mustangs 46 kills, and junior Kathryn Wilkerson gave SMU three players in double figures with 10 kills. SMU dropped a 3-0 decision to Alabama in the final game of the day.
· Southern Miss opened the Southern Miss La Quinta Inn Invitational with a 3-0 win over Sam Houston State and a 3-1 win over Jacksonville in the night cap Friday. Three Golden Eagles tallied double-digit kills led by Sarah Jane Bowden and Angela Hlavaty with 12 kills apiece and Ashley Mell chipped in 10. Maia Ivanova notched 20 digs followed by Kelsea Seymour and Mell adding 11 digs each against Jacksonville.
· UAB split a pair of matches Friday on the first day of the Magnolia Invitational at Ole Miss. The Blazers swept Alcorn State, 3-0, in the first match of the day but fell to Akron in a five-setter in the evening session. Senior outside hitter Andrea Lalic led the Blazers in kills in both matches, finishing with a combined total of 25. In the middle, the Blazers continued to get strong play from Patty Paniagua and Sam Serley as the duo joined with Lalic to combine for a .357 attack percentage on the day.
· Freshman Tyler Henderson slammed 10 kills and freshman libero Jessica Adams dug out 18 attacks to lead Tulsa to a 3-0 victory over Northwestern State in the ORU Classic Friday afternoon at the ORU Aerobic Center.
