Houston Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team was recognized among the nation's elite in academics, earning its second-straight American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award following an impressive 2011-12 academic year in the classroom. The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale. Houston Volleyball posted greater than a 3.20 team GPA over the last academic year with more than half of the team earning a spot on the University's Dean's List. Senior Stephanie Nwachukwu earned the Team Academic MVP Award, while she and former teammate Ashley Applequist garnered Conference USA Academic Medals for earning a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. 10 volleyball student-athletes were honored on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll during last year's academic year. Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's 20-year history, with exactly 4,827 awards been given out in total. 102 NCAA Division I schools were awarded this season.
