IRVING, Texas - Conference USA had five volleyball programs to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 season, announced by the organization Friday. The AVCA honored 533 teams in all, 102 were NCAA Division I volleyball programs and 220 came from the high school ranks. This number (533) once again breaks the previous year's total of 481 and sets a new all-time high.

Houston, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss and UCF produced at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, was designed to honor collegiate and high school volleyball teams which displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year.

The 2012 C-USA volleyball season is set to open on August 24 as all 12 teams will be participating in various tournaments. After a two-year absence, the league welcomes back its postseason championship which is set for Nov. 16-18 in Tulsa, Okla.
