TULSA, Okla. -
The University of Tulsa volleyball team defeated North Texas 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-17) Friday afternoon in its second game of the ORU Classic held at the Cooper Aerobics Center.
Junior outside hitter Jennifer Eichler slammed a match-high 10 kills and freshman setter Rachel Vukson recorded a double-double in her first collegiate start, with 31 assists and 10 digs. The Golden Hurricane hit .360 for the match, and it committed only eight attack errors, were blocked only three times in its most efficient match of the season.
"It was encouraging to see the ball control going back to the numbers that we expect," said Tulsa head coach Ed Allen. "Our sets averaged about a 2.5 (attack option from a set) for the match, which is exactly where our ball control needs to be. I think we had a little better defensive effort than in our past few matches. Our freshman setter Rachel Vukson did a good job in coming in and really delivering a very consistent ball for our kids to get solid placement."
Tulsa began the scoring in the first set with a kill by Eichler, and built a five-point lead at 14-9. The Hurricane then went on a 10-3 run to make the score 20-12 on a set error by Mean Green setter Marelle Lepmets. TU finished off a 25-18 victory with a block by sophomore middle hitter Hannah Stout and Eichler.
In the second set, both teams played even all the way and the set was tied as late as 16-16. Fueled by solid passing, balanced setting and timely kills, Tulsa finished the set on a 9-5 run for the win.
The Golden Hurricane began the third set by jumping out to a 13-4 lead, including a run of eight straight points on the service of senior outside hitter
Beth Hodge, triggering a plethora of errors by North Texas and kills by Stout and freshman outside hitter
Kelsey Hancock. North Texas pulled to within five points at 17-12, but TU ended the set scoring eight points to UNT's five for the 25-17 victory.
