MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior Courtney Collins won the Southern Indoor Championship this past weekend at The Racquet Club of Memphis while junior Stefanie Mikesz claimed the doubles and mixed doubles titles.
"Having missed the fall season due to injury, it's encouraging to see that Courtney and Stefanie are back healthy and getting some good match play in," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "We are looking forward to having them back this spring. I know they are going to have a great spring and lead our team."
The No. 2 seed Collins picked up three victories with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-0 victory over Maria Oprea of Jonesboro, Ark., before downing Emily Metcalf, 6-3, 7-6 (4), also of Jonesboro. In the finals, Collins defeated Mikesz, 6-2, 6-2, to wrap up her first singles tournament of the fall after recovering from shoulder surgery.
"Being able to come out and win my first tournament back was extremely unexpected and a blessing," Collins said. "I wanted to test out my shoulder for singles and see how the treatment and strengthening had paid off. It was great to be able to play. Now, I'm just trying to get stronger and play as much as I can before the season."
In doubles play, Mikesz teamed up with former Lady Tiger Mariya Slupska as they earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Deirdre Gedlitschka and Jessica Orton of Hoover and Birmingham, Ala., before claiming the title with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Allison Hodges of Germantown and former Lady Tiger Lindsey Wiseman.
In mixed doubles, Mikesz joined Joe Salisbury
as the duo defeated Jeremy Severs and Bethany Williams of Memphis, 8-1, and recorded an 8-5 win over Slupska and Jarryd Woog of Lakeland. In the finals, the pair took down former Tiger Jordan Smith
and current UCLA player Catherine Harrison, 9-7.
The Lady Tigers will begin their spring competition schedule Wednesday, Jan. 16 when Memphis hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff and UT Martin at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
