IRVING, Texas - Senior JORAN VLIEGEN of East Carolina and freshman MIRIAM ROSELL CANUDAS of UTSA have been named Conference USA's October Tennis Athletes of the Month. Vliegen posted a 12-2 overall singles record during the month of October. He becomes the first player in East Carolina history to win the Carolina Regional title and earn an automatic berth to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships. Canudas completed the month of October with nine victories. The true freshman won her first two singles matches of the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals to advance to the third round of the main draw.

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE MONTH (OCTOBER)
JORAN VLIEGEN, EAST CAROLINA
Senior | Maaselk, Belgium

Vliegen posted a 12-2 overall singles record during the month of October. He becomes the first player in East Carolina history to win the Carolina Regional title and earn an automatic berth to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships. That event will be played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 7-10. During regional championship action, he only dropped one set in seven matches. The senior registered a 5-2 record against ranked opponents, all of which were ranked ahead of his No. 87 mark in the ITA Preseason Singles Poll. Vliegen defeated No. 3 Peter Kobelt of Ohio State, ousted No. 5 Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest and upset No. 22 Michael Redlicki of Duke in the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships. He advanced to the main draw of the ITA All-America Championships with a third round win over No. 66 Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech. This is his first career C-USA Tennis Athlete of the Month award.

WOMEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE MONTH (OCTOBER)
MIRIAM ROSELL CANUDAS, UTSA
Freshman | Barcelona, Spain

Rosell Canudas completed the month of October with nine victories (five singles/four doubles). The true freshman won her first two singles matches of the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals to advance to the third round of the main draw. She also paired up with Isabelle Jonsson for two more doubles triumphs at the Texas Regionals in Fort Worth. The Barcelona, Spain native started the month and her career off by advancing to the finals of the Wildcats Invitational. She won her first three singles matches at the season-opening event and also teamed with Jonsson for a pair of victories in doubles play. This is her first career C-USA Tennis Athlete of the Month award.
