Twelve student-athletes have been named to the 2012 Conference USA Tennis All-Academic Teams. Due to a tie, there were six men and six women voted onto the teams by the league's sports information directors for the sport. Honorees must hold a minimum 3.2 GPA and have competed in at least 75 percent of their team's scheduled matches. All 12 of this year's selections boast academic marks better than 3.50.
2012 C-USA Men's Tennis All-Academic Team
East Carolina junior John Schmitt is a three-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and has played the majority of the season at the No. 3 and 4 singles position. The Raleigh, N.C., native holds a 3.66 GPA in business and sports an 11-8 singles and 13-8 record in doubles.
Michael Nuesslein of Rice has earned his first All-Academic honor with a 3.80 GPA in economics and sport management, with a business minor. The senior from Bad Waldsee, Germany is a two time President's Honor Roll member and ITA men's Scholar Athlete Award winner, a three-time C-USA Academic Medal winner and C-USA Honor Roll recipient. Nuesslein has posted a 16-6 singles record and has eight doubles wins for the No. 47 Owls.
Nuesslein's teammate Sam Garforth-Bles also makes his first appearance on the All-Academic Team. Garforth-Bles is a senior from Bragg Creek, Alberta, Canada with a 15-7 overall singles record this season, primarily at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles positions. The philosophy major holds a 3.68 GPA and is a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete Award winner and also has earned three C-USA Honor Roll honors and the C-USA Academic Medal.
SMU junior Tobias Flood is one of two repeat selections to the academic squad. The junior from Stabekk, Norway is a three-time C-USA Academic Medal winner and C-USA Honor Roll member. Flood, an economics major with an applied finance concentration, holds a 3.81 GPA and has posted a 12-6 doubles record for the Mustangs.
The other repeat selection to the All-Academic team is Tulsa's
Clifford Marsland. Marsland is one half of the nation's No. 9 doubles team and is a top 100 singles player as well. He sports a 14-7 singles record this season and a 16-5 mark on the doubles court. The Perth, Australia native was the 2011 ITA Central Region Doubles Champion and was part of the runner-up team at the national indoor tournament. He is an exercise and sports science major with a 3.52 GPA. Marsland is a three-time C-USA Honor Roll member and was an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2011.
Juan Bolona of UCF sports the only perfect 4.0 GPA among this year's honorees. The junior finance major from Miami holds a 13-4 doubles record at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions and has posted doubles wins over four nationally ranked teams.
2012 C-USA Women's Tennis All-Academic Team
Sophomore Maria Voscekova of Marshall earns her first C-USA All-Academic Team honor with her 3.72 GPA in international business. The Bratislava, Slovakia native is a two-time C-USA Honor Roll member and is 13-6 in singles competition this season, including an 11-5 record at the No. 2 spot. She owns a 15-5 record in doubles play, with 14 victories coming at the No. 1 position.
Memphis senior Tiffany Welcher sports a 3.66 GPA in liberal studies as a graduate student and a 13-4 record in singles play this season. The C-USA Honor Roll member hails from Clarksville, Ind., and is 14-4 in doubles, with the bulk of competition coming at the No. 1 position.
Welcher's teammate Courtney Collins is the lone repeat selection to the All-Academic Team. The nation's No. 33 singles player is 15-2 as the top player for the Tigers and boasts a 3.86 GPA in interdisciplinary studies. A native of Fulton, Miss., Collins boasts a 3-1 mark against top 45 players, including a win over a previous national champion. In addition to being a two-time All-Academic team selection, she is a C-USA Academic Medal winner and a member of the C-USA Honor Roll.
Rice senior Ana Guzman holds a 3.91 GPA in psychology and a spot on this year's All-Academic team. The four-time C-USA Honor Roll member and Academic Medalist plus a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete is 12-8 in singles play this season, splitting time between the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. The Guatemala City, Guatemala native has also been an All-C-USA player in singles and double during her career.
Sophomore Samantha Vickers of Tulsa earns her first appearance on the All-Academic team with a 3.60 GPA in biology. The Lincolnshire, England native is the No. 70 singles player in the country and holds a 17-2 record this season at the No. 2 position. She won the 2011 ITA Central Region Singles Championship and was named to the C-USA Honor Roll this season.
Communication sciences and disorders major Taylor Dubins of UCF rounds out this year's C-USA All-Academic honorees. The senior from North Miami Beach, Fla., holds a 3.77 GPA and is a three-time C-USA Honor Roll member and two-time Academic Medal winner. Dubins was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2011 and is the team leader in wins.
