Senior Courtney Collins of Memphis and Old Dominion sophomore Carlos Lopez Villa received the first Conference USA Women's and Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week honor, respectively. Collins opened the season going 3-1, including a victory over No. 15 Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the Georgia Invitational. Lopez Villa upset No. 32 Juan Spir of Georgia Tech, 6-4, 6-4, in his first appearance at the No. 1 singles spot for the Monarchs.

Memphis senior Courtney Collins competed in her first singles matches of the season last week after recovering from shoulder surgery during the fall. She went 3-1 with a win over No. 15 Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the Georgia Invitational. She also picked up victories against Lipscomb's Deahna Welcher, 6-4, 6-2, and UT Martin's Ivon Simic, 6-1, 6-1. Collins' lone loss came at the hands of No. 8 Lauren Herring of Georgia, 6-3, 6-0, in its own invitational. The Tigers won their two dual matches, 7-0, against Lipcomb and UT Martin. This marks Collins' third career Athlete of the Week honor and first for the 2013 season.

CARLOS LOPEZ VILLA, OLD DOMINION

Old Dominion sophomore Carlos Lopez Villa upset No. 32 Juan Spir of Georgia Tech in straight sets. Lopez Villa had a solid fall where he defeated several ranked opponents and continued the trend in the first match of the spring season Friday. He got off to a strong start against Spir, winning the first set 6-4, and with the second set tied at three a piece, he reeled off three of the next four points to seal the match 6-4, 6-4. He followed that performance by clinching the team's home opener with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Igor Braga of Norfolk State. ODU won 5-2 Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center. Competing at No. 1 singles for the first time in his career, Lopez Villa went 2-0 to open the season. This is his first Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor as the Monarchs are competing in their first season in C-USA.
