ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - An 80-degree February day greeted the Knights Friday as the UCF women's tennis team came through with a 5-2 victory against Troy at the UCF Tennis Complex. With the win, the Black and Gold stretched its record to 5-2 on the year, and it dropped the Trojans to 2-2.
The Knights broke out for the first overall point by winning a pair of doubles matches. Jenna Doerfler and Sofia Baptista breezed by Candela Munoz Giron and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega at No. 3, 8-2, while Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson kept their hot streak going with an 8-6 victory at No. 1 against Karoline Grymel and Lyubova Dorofeeva.
Handing UCF a commanding 3-1 lead during singles action, Haraldson notched a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Dorofeeva at No. 3 and Caroline Eberhart knocked off Munoz Giron at No. 5, 7-5, 6-4. With three matches left, they all would need deciding third sets.
After falling in her first set, Lorbergs battled back and ultimately provided the Knights with the fourth and deciding point by edging Grymel, 3-6,6-2, 7-6(4). UCF's No. 1 player was tied at 3-3 in the tiebreak before rattling off three-straight points, and finally put it away with a forehand winner. Closing out the day, Baptista snuck out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory against Ramirez-Vega at No. 6.
"Throughout the match I was down, but I kept on believing in myself and all of the training that we have done," Lorbergs said. "I thought I played well, and there were patches that really worked in my favor. I got down but I kept believing in myself, and everything pays off if the belief is there."
Closing out the weekend, UCF will host Furman for Youth Tennis Team Day Saturday at noon.
