Feb. 3, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Under first-year head coach Lisa Jackson, the UAB women's tennis team has started the 2013 season with three-straight wins following a 7-0 victory against Mercer on Sunday.
In a match played on the campus of Samford University, UAB ousted the Bears with wins at each court, including straight-set triumphs at all six singles’ positions.
“I could not have asked for a better start to the season from our girls,” UAB head coach Lisa Jackson said. “I thought we competed well all weekend, and it paid off for us.”
The Blazers ran through doubles play with 8-3 wins at each court. The UAB senior/freshman duo of Isabel Fernandez and Elaine Simon started the scoring with a victory at position No. 3 over Natalie Franklin and Roxy Bartz.
UAB’s team of Caroline Faught and Sarah Witkowski followed with their 8-3 triumph over Mercer’s Liza Klyachkin and Kealee Heffner to clinch the double point. Blazers Menanteau Moolman and Rachel Daniell then closed out doubles play with an 8-3 victory against Isabel Dennis and Lucy Payrat at the top spot.
“I was happy with the intensity in doubles,” said Jackson. “Right now, I like the attitude of the team and each player’s ability to step up when she has to.”
With a 1-0 lead after doubles, UAB set its sights on the singles courts, where the Blazers rolled past Mercer at each position en route to the win.
The top three positions delivered for the Green and Gold with three-straight victories to clinch the match. Fernandez ousted Dennis, 6-2, 6-2, at court No. 1, before Daniell rolled over Payrat, 6-3, 6-0, at the second position.
UAB’s Menanteau Moolman then used a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mercer’s Klyachkin at the third court to seal the win and give the Blazers a 4-0 lead.
Playing in her first match this season, Witkowski then added to UAB’s advantage with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Bartz at court No. 6, before Simon won her second-straight contest of the season, 6-3, 6-1, over Heffner at the fifth position.
