SMU sophomore Isabella Arcila has been named Conference USA Swimmer of the Year, marking the fourth consecutive season that an SMU swimmer has won the league's top honor. Student-athletes from SMU and Houston swept the 2013 swimming and diving specialty honors as announced Wednesday by the conference office.
Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced the 12 student-athletes that will receive the C-USA Winter Spirit of Service awards. The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with these honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, women's swimming and diving and men's and women's indoor track and field.
Six Conference USA women's swimming and diving student-athletes have been named to the 2012-13 C-USA All-Academic Team, as voted by the league's sports information directors for the sport. Six seniors make up this year's team and two are repeat selections. Nominees must hold at least a 3.2 GPA and be a regular participant for their team.
The Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championship kicks off Wednesday at the University of Houston Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. The four-day championship runs from Feb. 20-23. SMU is the defending team champion, having won 16-of-21 events in 2012.
