HOUSTON--The University of Houston softball team began practice this week in preparation for the Sugarland Round Robin this weekend.

Admission is free to fans for the event held at the Sugarland Imperial Park.

The Cougars will play Texas State at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sam Houston State at 3:30 p.m.

Last season, Houston defeated Texas State, 4-0, in the Houston Marriott Classic. The Cougars are 8-4 in the all-time series against the Bobcats. In a mid-week game against Sam Houston last season, the Cougars defeated the Bearkats 10-2.

On Sunday, Houston will play Louisiana-Lafayette at 9:30 a.m. and Texas Tech at 11:30 a.m.

UH played UL in the Super Regionals last season, but fell short in the final game. Houston is 3-9 in the all-time series against the Ragin' Cajuns.

Last season, the Cougars went 54-11 on their way to their second-consecutive Conference USA. The Houston softball team caped the 2008 season as the only sports program in Cougar history to record 54 wins. The previous highest win total of a UH team was 48 wins recorded by the Houston baseball team in 2000 and 2002.

Led by head coach Kyla Holas, 2008 C-USA Coach of the Year, the Cougars earned the program's first ever national ranking, and was ranked in the Top 10 for most of the season.

With their rankings, the Cougars hosted the Regionals and Super Regionals at Cougar Softball Stadium.

At the Regionals, the Cougars went 2-0, with a 2-1 win against Washington and a 9-0 win over Delaware.

The Cougars split wins with Louisiana-Lafayette in the Super Regionals, but fell short in the final game, with a 4-0 decision by the Ragin' Cajuns.

With seven starters returning this season, the Cougars look to win the C-USA Championships and once again advance to the Regionals and Super Regionals.
