IRVING, Texas – Conference USA has announced its softball all-conference and specialty award winners for 2013. Houston junior catcher Haley Outon has been named the Conference USA Player of the Year and Tulsa junior pitcher Aimee Creger has been tabbed as the Pitcher of the Year. Coach of the Year honors went to UAB’s Marla Townsend, while the Blazers’ Caitlin Attfield earned Freshman of the Year accolades. UTEP’s Erika Arcuri was selected as Newcomer of the Year. In addition, 22 players were voted to the All-C-USA First and Second Teams. Eleven players were selected to the All-Freshman Team. Players from all nine C-USA softball teams were honored.
Outon is the second Houston player in the past three seasons to be named the league’s Player of the Year and is the fourth Cougar to earn the award, joining Melissa Gregson (2011), Jessica Valis (2007) and Kristen Glowacz (2005). She ended the regular season with a .349 batting average and league-leading figures in home runs (15), slugging (.743), RBI (59) and total bases (113). Her 59 RBI are tied for the fourth-best single-season total in C-USA history.
Creger, the 2011 C-USA Freshman of the Year, led the conference in overall (1.00) and C-USA-only (0.76) ERA while posting the lowest average against (.177) and striking out the most batters looking (86). Now a two-time member of the All-C-USA First Team, Creger fanned 140 hitters during league player, a conference best number, and posted a 24-5 overall record with seven shutouts and 267 strikeouts. The Pitcher of the Year nod is a second straight for a Tulsa hurler after Lacey Middlebrooks shared the award last season.
Attfield is the second UAB player to earn C-USA’s Freshman of the Year award, joining Lauren Webster (2010). She hit .363 during her first season, the fourth-best average in the league, and scored a team-leading 32 runs while recording a 57 hits, also a team best. Attfield also stole 22 bases and laid down nine sacrifice bunts for the regular-season champions.
Arcuri made an immediate impact for UTEP, batting .347 with 26 runs scored during her first season after transferring from FIU. Her batting average was the seventh-best figure in C-USA. Defensively, Arcuri was flawless in conference games, recording a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 42 chances.
Townsend was selected as Coach of the Year for the third time, but first since 2006, after guiding the Blazers to the regular-season title with a 19-4 C-USA mark and a 36-15 overall record. She directed UAB to its fourth consecutive 35-plus win season and the No. 1 seed at the C-USA Softball Championship.
The 2013 Conference USA Softball Championship will be held May 9-11 at the Collins Family Softball Complex in Tulsa, Okla. Game times and live streaming information can be found at Championship Central.
