El Paso, Texas – Colleen Hohman pitched a complete game, Camilla Carrera belted her 30th home run of the season and Chelsea Troupe went 4-4 in their 10-7 victory over UNM on Tuesday at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. The Miners moved to 15-36 on the season after the win.
The Lobos got the scoring started early with a two run home run off the bat of Jessica Garcia in the first inning.
The Miners evened the score in the bottom of the frame. A RBI single by Charissa Ballesteros to score Camilla Carrera who singled and moved to third on a double by Chelsea Troupe. Troupe moved to third on Ballesteros’ single and then promptly stole home to knot the game at two all.
Courtney Ware dropped a ball down the right field line for a RBI double to break the tie and give the Miners a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Kayla Oranger hit an infield single to shortstop which scored the fourth Miner run of the day. An errant throw by the Lobo backstop led to another run for UTEP. Hohman hit a single to right field driving in Oranger from second.
The Lobos loaded the bases off of two singles and a walk with Hohman in the circle in the top of the sixth and got two runs across on walks with the bases loaded. Their third run of the inning came on a sac fly to right field cutting the Miner lead to just one.
Leading off the bottom of the sixth inning Carrera drove a ball out of the ball park for her 30th home run of the season. The nation’s home run leader is the first player to reach the 30 home run plateau in a season since Kelly Majam (Hawaii) did it in 2010 and she is tied fourth on the single season home run list with three other people.
UTEP scored three more runs in the inning to give them a 10-5 lead over the Lobos.
UNM didn’t go quietly in the top of the seventh, scoring two on a double by Dani Castro. Hohman retired Guillermo on a strikeout and got Hignojos to groundout to first to end the game and secure the victory.
Hohman pitched her 10th complete game of the season and picked up her sixth victory of the season. She tossed 7 innings giving up seven earned runs on eight hits and 7 walks.
Troupe went 4-4 with two doubles and Courtney Ware went 3-3 with two RBIs. Ballesteros and Oranger each went 2-4 at the plate driving in two and one, respectively.
The Miners will return to the diamond on Wednesday for their final games of the 2012 campaign. They will take on UNM in a doubleheader at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex starting at 11:00 a.m.
