BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The East Carolina softball team begins conference play this weekend with three games against UAB starting at 2 p.m. (ET) on March 16 at UAB Softball Stadium. The Pirates enter the weekend's action with an overall record of 8-15 and are looking to end a current four-game losing streak.
The final game of the series will be shown on FOX Sports Net with Bruce Howard (pxp) and Amanda Scarborough (color) on the call starting at 12 p.m. (ET).

The Blazers (11-5, 3-0 Conference USA) started the conference season strong and took all three games from UCF in Orlando, Fla. last weekend ... The UAB pitching staff held the Knights to just three runs in the series ... Freshman Caitlin Attfield has been a spark at the top of the lineup this season with her .380 batting average, 19 hits, eight runs and 10 stolen bases ... Senior Anna Kimbrell and junior Kristen McGrath provided the power in the lineup as each has hit six home runs ... Kimbrell also has a slugging percentage of .969 and 11 RBI on her 11 hits ... McGrath leads the club with her 16 RBI and 34 total bases ... The pitching staff has been equally impressive ... Senior Lauren Webster is 5-1 with 0.88 ERA and has accumulated 67 strikeouts in her 39.2 innings in the circle ... Junior Lannah Campbell is 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA and is tied for nation's lead with her three saves ... Junior Leigh Streetman is tied for the team lead with five wins with a pair of complete games, a save and 34 strikeouts in her 34 innings worked ... UAB is coached by Marla Townsend, who is the first and only softball coach in the history of the program ... Townsend is 156-144 since she began the program in 1999... The Blazers won over 30 games for the sixth time in program history in 2012 and earned their third consecutive bid to the NCAA Championship ... The Pirates hold a slight 19-18 edge in the all-time series between the two schools.

Junior Jill Jelnick is 7-for-21 (.333 BA) with two walks and five career RBI vs. the Blazers ... Junior Kristi Oshiro has a career .300 batting average (.6-for-20) with three walks, four runs and a triple ... Sophomore Sarah Christian has a 1-2 record with 2.47 career ERA in 17 innings thrown in three career contests.
The Pirates are 13-20 in the conference opening series since the start of the 2002 season ... ECU went 0-3 last season on the road at Tulsa ... Since the start of the 2002 season, the Pirates are also 13-20 in the opening road conference series ... ECU last won a road conference opening series during the 2011 season when the program went 2-1 against Marshall in a three-game set.

After pushing a single up the middle against Hawai'i (3/12), Jordan Lewis has reach base safely in 16 of the team's last 18 games.
Offense Continues To Impress
East Carolina's offense has had a strong start to the season with a .267 team batting average ... The batting average is the third-highest for the program after 23 games since 2008, and the seventh time that the team's hitting has been over .265 upon completion of 23 games over the last 10 years ... The program's 32 doubles are the fourth-most in that same 10-year span ... The 153 hits are the third-highest total since the 2008 team's 199 ... The 237 total bases are the most since 2008 (292 total bases) and marks the fourth time with 230 or more total bases in the first 23 games in the last 10 seasons.
Individual Conference Leaders
The Pirates, through the midway point of the fifth week of softball action, have several players that are ranked highly in Conference USA ... Junior Kristi Oshiro leads the conference in batting average (.412), triples (4) and total bases (46) ... She is second in runs (19), third in hits (28), fourth in on-base percentage (.468) and slugging percentage (.676), tied for fourth in doubles (7) plus tied for eighth in sacrifice bunts (3) ... Junior Alex Fieldhouse is tied for second in total bases (45), third in slugging percentage (.692) and RBI (18), tied for fourth in home runs (5), tied for fifth in triples (1), sixth in sacrifice flies (2), tied for eighth in doubles (6) and tied for 10th in hits (22) ... Junior Jill Jelnick is tied for ninth in runs scored (13) and tied for fifth in triples (1) ... Junior Jordan Lewis is tied for fifth in triples (1), seventh in batting average (.344) and eighth in stolen bases (8) ... Sophomore Sarah Christian is third in appearances (17), fourth in innings pitched (75.2), fifth in wins (6) and sixth in games started (11) ... She is also eighth in strikeouts (50) ... ECU, as a team, is tied for the conference lead in triples (8), second in slugging percentage (.413), tied for second in doubles (32), third in total bases (237) plus fourth in hits (137) and stolen bases (21).
Kristi Oshiro ranks among the NCAA leaders in several categories in the first release of statistics this week (3/10) ... Oshiro is fifth in triples (4.0), 10th in triples per game (0.19), 11th in toughest to strikeout (62.0) 46th in batting average (.435), 67th in doubles per game (0.33) 85th in slugging percentage (.726), 100th in on-base percentage (.493) and 108th in runs (0.98) ... Alex Fieldhouse also finds herself among the NCAA leaders in several categories ... She is 70th in slugging percentage (.746), 92nd in home runs (5.0), 116th in home runs per game (0.24) and 137th in doubles per game (0.29) ... Jordan Lewis is 125th nationally in stolen bases per game (0.38) ... In the circle, Sarah Christian is 84th in walks per seven innings (1.81) and 114th in wins (6.0).
Need To Keep Them Scoreless in the First
The Pirates have yet to win a game this season when their opponent tallies a score in the opening inning (0-10) ... ECU is also only 1-12 when its opponent crosses home first ... East Carolina is a perfect 8-0 though when holding opponents to two runs or less.
East Carolina, after 11 days on the road, returns home to host Houston in a three-game set from March 23-25 at ECU Softball Stadium. The team's first game of a doubleheader against the Cougars is set to begin at 1 p.m. on March 23.
