IRVING, Texas – Tulsa, the Conference USA preseason favorite, began the 2013 season with a pair of wins at the Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La., including a 3-1 victory against No. 22/21 North Carolina. Junior hurler Aimee Creger tossed a complete game against the Tar Heels, striking out seven batters. UAB earned two more wins at the Paradise Classic in Honolulu, downing Mississippi and Saint Mary’s to improve to 3-1 for the season. In other action, East Carolina, Memphis and Houston split opening day games to secure their first victories of the campaign.

Junior outfielder Haley Henshaw drove in three runs in two games to lead the Tulsa softball team to wins over No. 22 North Carolina, 3-1, and Hampton, 3-0, Friday at the Tiger Classic at Tiger Park.

Senior pitcher Lacey Middlebrooks (1-0) earned the win against Hampton with a one-hit shutout in the opener Friday morning. She struck out five batters and walked two. Junior Aimee Creger (1-0) picked up the complete-game win against North Carolina, striking out seven batters and scattering five hits.

UAB senior catcher Chandler Orr hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning en route to the Blazers' 5-0 win over Saint Mary's, and capped the day with the second of two wins, as UAB defeated Ole Miss in its first game of the second day of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic, 5-3.
