Softball Picked to Repeat as C-USA Champs

TULSA, Okla. - Four Tulsa softball student-athletes were named to the Conference USA Preseason Softball Team, and the Golden Hurricane was picked to repeat as C-USA Champions in a vote by the league's coaches, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Senior Lacey Middlebrooks was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and is on the All-C-USA Preseason Softball Team along with seniors shortstop Samantha Cobb and center fielder Caitlin Everett, and junior third baseman Jill Barrett. Tulsa's four preseason all-conference selections led the league.
The Golden Hurricane, which won the 2011 and 2012 C-USA regular season championships and the 2012 tournament title, received six of the nine first-place votes. TU ended last season with a 42-14 overall record and a 19-5 mark in C-USA play.
All four TU players - Middlebrooks, Cobb, Everett and Barrett - were first-team All-C-USA postseason selections in 2012. Middlebrooks was the 2012 C-USA Co-Pitcher of the Year.
Middlebrooks ended the 2012 season with a 20-6 record and a 2.15 ERA overall, including a 12-2 record and 1.40 ERA in conference games. At the plate, she hit .306 with 38 RBI overall, and drove in 22 runs in C-USA contests. She was also a first-team NFCA Midwest Region selection.
Barrett set a TU single season record in 2012 with a .416 batting average and tied the school record with 79 hits last year. She added 43 runs and 29 RBI in all games, and hit .442 with 17 runs scored in C-USA games. She was a first-team NFCA Midwest Region selection.
In 2012, Everett hit .366 with seven triples, 55 runs and 29 RBI overall, and .407 with 25 runs scored in C-USA contests. She was a second-team NFCA Midwest Region selection. Cobb ended the 2012 season with a .339 batting average, 11 home runs, 46 RBI and 46 runs scored. She hit .342 with 19 RBI and 20 runs scored in C-USA games.
Houston, which received one first place vote, was picked to finish second, followed by UCF, UAB and Marshall. East Carolina and Memphis, which were picked to finish sixth and seventh, respectively, each received one first place vote. TU, Houston, UCF and UAB all participated in the NCAA postseason in 2012.
The Golden Hurricane opens the 2013 season at the Tiger Classic, Feb. 8-10, where it will face Hampton, North Carolina, Purdue, and the host LSU. TU will play each of the first four weekends on the road before its home opener on March 6 against in-state rival Oklahoma State, prior to opening C-USA play against Marshall March 9-10.
Tulsa will play host to the 2013 C-USA Softball Championship May 9-11 at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
