Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samantha Cobb hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Aimee Creger pitched a complete-game shutout to lead Tulsa to a 3-0 game two win after UAB won game one, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at UAB Softball Field.

The Golden Hurricane (37-12, 18-5 C-USA) clinched at least a share of the Conference USA regular season championship with the game two victory. UAB is now 36-18 overall and 17-6 in C-USA play this season.

The doubleheader split sets up a rubber game at 1 p.m. Sunday with the winner claiming the No. 1 seed in the C-USA Tournament May 10-12 in Birmingham. TU can win the regular season C-USA title outright with a victory Sunday.

Creger (17-5) struck out 10 batters and allowed four hits and four walks to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Leigh Streetman (10-8) struck out seven and allowed three walks and four hits in the loss for the Blazers.

Cobb was 2-for-4 and scored the only run for the Hurricane in game one. Lacey Middlebrooks (17-5) allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out five batters in the loss. Lannah Campbell (14-6) pitched 5.0 innings and earned the win for UAB.

"I am really proud of our team," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. "We said after the first game, `We've been here before. Let's dig deep and go put ourselves in position to win another series.' We played a good, clean game in the second. Aimee pitched really well. Lacey pitched really well after the first inning in game one."

Caitlin Everett led off game two with a single to short, and Jill Barrett followed with a bunt base hit. Cobb followed by launching her 11th homer of the season to left field.

The three runs in the first proved to be all the Hurricane needed, as Creger scattered four hits and four walks, never allowing a runner past second base. TU got one hit - another bunt single by Barrett - for the rest of the game, and drew three walks, but did not score again.

"I expect the team to come out with a lot of energy tomorrow," said Bargfeldt. "We spent the week in finals, and maybe now after seeing some live pitching again, we can come out tomorrow and be more comfortable. We'll have the same approach we've had all year - go out and win every phase of the game. I choose not to point out that we're playing for a championship. Some coaches do, but I say just like we've done for 23 (conference) games, let's go do it in number 24. The players know what's at stake. They know what they're playing for."

UAB 2, Tulsa 1

Tulsa scored in the top of the first, but UAB scored twice in the bottom of the inning and held on to win game one, 2-1.
