HOUSTON--The University of Houston softball team won its final game of the three-game conference series against Marshall, 3-2, at Cougar Softball Stadium to move to 12-10 in C-USA, and 25-23 overall.
Marshall hit four consecutive singles in the top of the first inning, but with two runners leaving early and Rebecca Gamby flying out to centerfield, the top of the inning would end with no score.
Senior Jessica Valis, who reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop scored on a double by senior Laurie Wagner in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The double was Wagner's ninth this season, which is tied for a team-high with senior Haley Valis. She also added two more RBI for a season total of 47. She now has a 154 career-RBI, which is the second most career RBI in program history.
The Cougars continued to score in the bottom of the second inning, adding two more runs. Senior Katie Bush singled to leftfield to knock in Angela Spittler, who reached base on a single. The second run would come when sophomore Casey Willow scored by an RBI-groundout from Laurie Wagner. Neither run was earned because Marshall committed two errors during the inning.
Marshall would add two more runs in the top of the fifth inning on three hits, but left bases loaded, and wouldn't be able to add any more runs or hits for the rest of the game.
Sophomore Baillie Lott moves to 16-11 this season after walking six, and allowing two runs on seven hits. She wasn't able to strikeout any batters.
Bush went 2-for-2, with an RBI and a SAC during the game. The Cougars left five runners on base, while the Thundering Herd left 11 runners on.
Houston looks to win the Conference USA Championship beginning May 7, when they travel to EL Paso, Texas for the C-USA Championship presented by Helen of Troy.
