HATTIESBURG, Miss.—The UAB Softball team swept a doubleheader at Southern Miss on Saturday with scores of 5-1 and 2-1 (eight innings). The Blazers had a career day as they saw three records fall or tied.
Kristen McGrath set a new UAB single-season home run record, Lannah Campbell fanned a career-high 15 batters in game two and Mandy Lowman’s two RBI give her 124 in her career to tie the all-time record.
The Blazers (34-17, 15-5 C-USA) and Golden Eagles (13-29, 4-15) will play the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
“Great things are happening,” UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. “We’re still working to execute certain situations, but I’m proud of the effort on defense and both pitchers pitched outstanding games.
“We had some really good hits that were caught. Two wins today is huge. We just look to come out tomorrow and finish strong, score early and execute both offensively and defensively.”
Game 1: UAB 5, Southern Miss 1
The Blazers hit five doubles in game one. Catherine Crawford doubled in back to back at bats and the second one paid off in the third inning as she scored Heather Pearson, who reached base on a Golden Eagle miscue and advanced to second on a Whitney Fletcher sacrifice bunt.
In the fifth inning, Fletcher reached on a single and Crawford got a free pass to first after taking a pitch to the hand. The runners moved up on a textbook sacrifice bunt by Kayla Orr.
K. McGrath stepped to the plate and cranked her 14th homer of the season to left – a new UAB single-season record, topping the 13 set by Andrea Rodgers in 2007.
The Blazers added another run in the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Megan McGrath reached first on an infield single and Pearson re-entered the game to run. Fletcher brought Pearson home with a double to left.
Southern Miss got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a solo-shot over the centerfield wall off the bat of Mackenzie Sher.
Amber Torres (10-3) pitched her seventh complete game of the season. She scattered six hits and struck out five.
Beth Dietrich (7-12) was tagged with the loss after allowing 11 hits and five runs – four earned. Dietrich did not walk any batters and struck out four in a complete-game effort.
Game 2: UAB 2, Southern Miss 1 (8)
Lowman got things started for the Blazers in the second inning. Lowman, who was held hitless in game one, rocked a solo-shot over the left field wall to give UAB an early 1-0 lead.
Southern Miss tied it up in the bottom of the sixth inning. Britney Dinelt tripled to right and scored on a Carolina Walker single through the right side.
UAB loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t break the tie. Southern Miss went three up, three down and the teams headed to extra frames.
Leadoff hitter Lowman hit her second home run of the game to give UAB a one-run margin, 2-1. UAB starter Campbell retired the side in the bottom of the frame to earn the win.
Campbell struck out a career-high 15 batters, all but one swinging. She eclipsed her previous best 10 strikeouts, which she set earlier this season vs. Memphis (3/10). She allowed just three hits and no walks.
Courtney Ramos (4-11) suffered the loss, pitching all eight innings and allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
