UTEP vs. Marshall Game 2
EL PASO, Texas - Mariann Webb sailed her first career long ball, good for two runs, to lift UTEP past Marshall, 8-6, in the second game of the Friday's doubleheader. The Miners dropped the series opener, 6-0, to move to 21-11, 4-4 in Conference USA action.
Webb ended the day 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI.
Stacie Townsend and Camilla Carrera also knocked the ball over the fence, giving the Miners a total of 31 home runs in 2008.
Townsend received the loss in the first game and falls to 9-6. She allowed five runs on six hits and struck out three in 4.1 innings of play. Kelly Curran, who came in relief, fanned four and gave up a run.
Nichole Tunget (7-1) was the Game 2 winner after tossing 5.2 innings. She let go four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Renee DiPuccio received the save, her first this season, the third in her career.
Marshall came out swinging in the first game posting a hit in all seven innings including a big fifth stanza where the Herd connected for four hits good for as many runs.
The Miners had just four hits to the Herd's 10 and left six on base, two of which were in scoring position.
Marshall's Samantha Rodriguez was the game's big hitter, blasting a triple in her first at bat then hitting a three-run long ball to give the Herd the 6-0 Game 1 win.
The Miners bounced back in a big way in the nightcap, scoring in all but the fifth inning.
With two outs on the board, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the first put the Miners in a scoring opportunity.
Ashley Perez laced the ball into the left-center gap, diving Simone Holland home to open with a 1-0 lead.
UTEP was able to connect four times in the bottom of the second, including two bunt singles - one of which was Webb's first career hit and the other that scored a run, putting the Miners ahead by two.
Perez, who finished the game 2-for-3, hit her second triple of the season to open the bottom of the third. Ashley Ellis followed with a double that scored Perez and after a sacrifice bunt by Rachel Schaeffer, Webb stepped to the plate for her first career homer in just her sixth career at bat giving the Miners the 4-0 advantage.
UTEP scored again in the fourth frame off an RBI-single by Townsend.
The Herd put up four runs in the top of the sixth, including a two-run round tripper by Rodriguez, her second of the series.
The Miners answered back solo homers by Carrera and Townsend to add security at 8-4.
The Herd, looking for a last chance opportunity, opened the seventh with a single and a double. A strikeout later, Caitlyn Jackson drove home two runs with a double into right centerfield.
DiPuccio put away another batter but walked the next. A single by Kelly Nielson put a runner in scoring position but a pop-up to UTEP's shortstop ended the threat giving the Miners the 8-6 final.
UTEP looks to capture the series Saturday in the final meeting between the two teams. First pitch is slated for noon. The Miners next head to Texas Tech for a two-game road trip, the return home to host former Western Athletic Conference foe Nevada on Thurs., March 27.
