EL PASO, Texas - After scoring six runs in the final two innings the Marshall University Softball team was unable to score anymore runs as it lost the second game of a Conference USA doubleheader to UTEP, 8-6, Friday afternoon at Helen of Troy Field.
In the top of the seventh inning the Thundering Herd (11-16, 3-4, C-USA) scored two runs before loading the bases, placing the go ahead run on first base with two outs. The Miners (21-11, 4-4 C-USA) defense forced a third out in the seventh to close out the victory.
UTEP held the Herd to only three hits in the first five innings of the game. The Miner's Nichole Tunget (7-1) was credited with the victory and went 5.2 innings. She gave up four runs off seven hits. Renee Dipuccio closed the game for UTEP and earned the save after going 1.1 innings surrendering two runs of two hits.
For a third-straight game, Rodriguez hit a home run. In the top of the six, Folden led off the sixth inning with a sharp double to center. Rodriguez recorded her sixth home run of the season, ending the Herd scoring drought.
Still trailing 6-2 in the top of the sixth, the Herd would cut the deficit even more. With one-out, Sofie singled to center field. She would later score on a Kelly Nielson two-out double to right field. Nielson scored on the next play, when a Marcena Bertoldo hit a slapper that resulted in error by the Miner's short stop.
The Miners increased their margin to 8-4 in the bottom portion of the inning with a pair of home runs.
Trailing by four, the Herd gave a valiant effort in its last attempt. The Herd began the top of the seventh with a Deanna Tourville single. Folden blasted a shot that hit the left field wall resulting in a double advancing Tourville to third.
With runners in scoring position and one-out, Jackson doubled to right field scoring both Folden and Tourville. After a Melanie Stoehr walk and a Kelly Nieslon single the Herd loaded the bases with two outs, trailing by two. The Miners would force Bertoldo to pop up to short for the final out of the game.
The Miners moved a game closer in the all-time series and now only trails Marshall, 5-4.
