Memphis Grabs 3-0 Victory Over UTEP in Game One of Double Header
March 20, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Carly Hummel struck out nine batters en route to tossing a shutout and leading the University of Memphis softball team (12-8; 2-1 C-USA) past the UTEP Miners (20-9; 3-1 C-USA) 3-0 in game one of Saturday’s double header. Hummel, who allowed three hits and walked three batters, has now recorded three career shutouts. She improves to 7-4 on the season with the win and has now struck out nine or more batters in seven of nine starts. Stacie Townsend suffered the loss for the Miners after giving up three runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. After both teams were shutout in the first inning, Memphis scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double by Kailey Kassner. The Tigers scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Leigh Rowan connected on a one-out double which allowed Heather Mott to score. The Miners appeared ready to strike in the top of the second when they loaded the bases with two outs. However, Hummel was able to get out of the jam by striking out UTEP’s Kia Moore. UTEP would again load the bases in the fifth inning before getting Ashley Ellis to fly out to end the inning. The Tigers are now 11-1 when they score two or more runs. Memphis and UTEP will game two of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Tiger Softball Complex.
