PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Memphis stranded nine base runners and gave up two unearned runs in a 2-0 loss to North Dakota State on Saturday in the Stanford Nike Invitational.
The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Tigers, which had tied for the program long. Memphis falls to 10-3 on the season, while NDSU improve to 6-8.
The Tigers had a base runner on in every inning and outhit the Bison, 5-4, but failed to advance any of the runners home. The game marked the first time this season Memphis had failed to score a run.
North Dakota State scored unearned runs in the first and third innings to improve to 3-0 all-time against Memphis. Nicole Rivera reached on an error to leadoff the game and came around to score on a two-out single by Taylor Mortensen.
The Bison later added a run in the third inning when Rivera scored her second run of the game. The shortstop reached on a single to lead off the game and after advancing to second on a sac bunt, scored on a two-base error at third base. Memphis committed three errors in the game.
Senior southpaw Janelle Valle (2-2) suffered the loss for Memphis after allowing two runs on three hits in four innings of work. Valle struck out four in the game and allowed three walks. Lauren Carley pitched three innings of scoreless relief and allowed one hit with three strikeouts and a walk.
Whitney Johnson (3-2) earned the victory in the circle for the Bison, scattering five hits with three walks and striking out eight.
Memphis will next play UC Davis at approximately 8:15 p.m. (PT) today in the tournament. The Tigers close the tournament against Colorado State on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. (PT).
