HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Freshman Lindsey Croft threw a one-hitter to lead the UAB softball team to a 2-0 victory over Hawai'i on the second day of the Hawai'i Paradise Classic Friday evening. Earlier in the day the Blazers suffered a loss to No. 6 Oklahoma.

"I'm extremely proud of the way the team responded today," said UAB head softball coach Marla Townsend. "It really says a lot about this group and how they handle adversity."

The Blazers took the 2-0 lead in the third inning after junior Cameron Skates doubled to left field and junior Martina Landrum was able to score from first. Two at-bats later sophomore Kayla Orr singled to centerfield allowing Skates to tack on a two-run lead.

But the outstanding performance of the game came from Croft (1-1). In seven innings, Croft gave up only one hit, struck out eight and walked four. The Rainbow Wahine's only hit came from Malamaisaualf Manuma early on in the first inning.

"Lindsey Croft had an incredible game," said Townsend. "But the rest of the team played amazing defense. They also came through big time for us at the plate swinging the bats."

Skates led the Blazers offensively, tallying two hits, one run and one RBI. Landrum and sophomore Kayla Orr both registered one hit apiece. Orr also recorded a RBI and Landrum was credited with one run.

The Blazers now hold a 2-0 all-time record against Hawai'i.

In the first game of the day, UAB struggled offensively and defensively. Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 18-0. Amber Flores hit two three-run homers and ended the day with eight RBI.

The Blazers will face LSU in bracket play on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. HST.
