Brooke Smart is a returning starter for the 2007 edition of The University of Tulsa softball squad. The sophomore outfielder has played in 58 games last season for the Golden Hurricane. Her ten homeruns led the squad, as her final homerun of the season was a very historic one. With two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh inning, Smart hit a three-run, walk-off home run. The hit gave TU its first Conference USA Championship and an automatic bid for the NCAA Regionals.
Playing mostly in leftfield, Smart earned a spot on the All- C-USA Freshman Team, as well as on the C-USA Championship All-Tournament, the Florida State Invitational and Best Western Airport-Tulsa Festival all-tournament teams. She was named the C-USA Hitter of the Week on March 27.
As a 2007 nominee to the NCAA Leadership Conference, Smart is also an active member of the TU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The past two years, Smart and the Golden Hurricane softball teams have participated in the National Reading Day by reading to area elementary students. She also took part of the Shop with a Cop program that pairs a student-athlete and a policeman to take an underprivileged child Christmas shopping. Smart is also a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has participated in Shadow Day at TU, where a local elementary school student gets to see what it is like to be a college student for a day.
