UAB won its first NCAA Softball Regional title Sunday with a 3-2 win against UCLA in 13 innings to advance to the Super Regional. Junior Leigh Streetman struck out seven batters and did not allow an earned run in 7.2 innings of relief to earn the win. Blazers senior center fielder Whitney Fletcher was the hero, tripling to right-center field in the bottom of the 13th to score Heather Pearson. UAB will play No. 2 national seed Florida in a best-of-three series for a trip to the Women's College World Series. UAB is the second C-USA team in the past three seasons to advance to the Super Regional (Houston, 2011).
Softball - 5/18/2013
UAB stayed unbeaten at the Louisville Regional, topping the host and No. 16 national seed Cardinals, 7-4, to move into Sunday needing just one win to advance to the Super Regionals. Lannah Campbell earned her second win in as many days, striking out five during her six innings of relief. Designated player Kristen McGrath was 3-for-3 with a run and RBI, while C-USA Freshman of the Year Caitlin Attfield was 2-for-4 with two runs scored from her leadoff spot. The Blazers will face UCLA Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT.
Softball - 5/17/2013
UAB posted a 6-3 win over No. 13/16 UCLA during its opening game of the 2013 NCAA Tournament at the Louisville Regional. Lannah Campbell went the distance for the Blazers, earning the win and striking out seven batters. Whitney Fletcher was 2-for-4 at the plate for UAB, scoring a driving in one run. The Blazers scored all six of their runs in the third inning. Play will continue for all four C-USA NCAA Tournament teams Saturday.
Softball - 5/16/2013
The NCAA Softball Championship gets started Friday, with league champion Marshall, along with at-large selections Tulsa, UAB and Houston representing Conference USA in the field.
This is the third consecutive season that C-USA has earned at least four bids to the NCAA Tournament and the 10th time that the league has earned multiple bids in the 14 seasons it has sponsored softball.
