UCF & Colorado College Advance to NCAA Women's Soccer Championship
Nov. 5, 2012
IRVING, Texas - Conference USA tournament champion UCF (17-4-1) and at-large selection Colorado College (14-3-5) earned berths to the 2012 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. Both schools will face first-round opponents they defeated during the regular season.
UCF, ranked No. 20 nationally in the most recent NSCAA poll, is making its 17th NCAA Championship appearance and sixth in a row. Last season, the Knights advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight and the 1982 squad earned a trip to the national championship match. UCF will host Miami (Fla.) (9-7-3) in the first round on Saturday at 6 p.m. EST at the UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando. If the Knights advance, they will meet the winner of a first-round match between No. 2 seed Florida (17-4-1) and Florida Gulf Coast (14-3-3). UCF has advanced to the second round in its last five NCAA Championships.
Colorado College earned its first share of the Conference USA regular-season title this season after joining the league as an affiliate member in 2006 - the last time the Tigers appeared in the NCAA Tournament. This season, CC advanced to the 2012 C-USA Championship semifinals before being eliminated on penalty kicks. The Tigers are riding an eight-match unbeaten streak into their first-round match with Denver (15-2-4). The two teams met in their season openers Aug. 17, with Colorado College winning 1-0 in Denver. The Pioneers will again host this NCAA match-up, but date and time will be announced at a later time.
Conference USA has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Championship 10 times in the last 12 seasons.
The 31st annual NCAA Division I Women's College Cup will be played Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 in San Diego, Calif., with the University of San Diego serving as host at its Torero Stadium.
