Women's Soccer All-Academic Team Announced

IRVING, Texas - Conference USA's commitment to excellence continues to show as 25 women's soccer student-athletes have been named to the 2011 Conference USA All-Academic Teams. Memphis produced three first-team selections, while East Carolina and Tulsa had four student-athletes apiece honored on the first and second teams.

C-USA Defensive Player of the Year Lizzy Simonin of Memphis earned a spot on the All-Academic First Team, after receiving second-team honors a year ago. Simonin has compiled a 3.81 GPA as a physical education major. She was joined on the all-academic first team by classmate Lizzy Hildebrandt and junior defender Christie Kline. Hildebrandt is a repeat selection to the first team with a 3.74 GPA as a mechanical engineering major. Kline holds a 3.90 GPA as a business finance major and member of a Tiger defense that registered a school record 13 shutouts.

East Carolina seniors Jessica (Woodward) Abshire and Kimmy Cummings received spots on the C-USA All-Academic first team. Both are three-time members of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. A triple major in management information systems, business marketing and business management, Cummings holds a 3.90 GPA and earned a place on the All-Conference first team as a midfielder. Abshire holds a perfect 4.0 GPA as an elementary education major and is a repeat selection to the all-academic team.

Rice also placed a pair on the all-conference first team in juniors Julia Barrow and Lauren LaGro. An English major with a minor in poverty, justice and human capabilities, Barrow has compiled a 3.82 GPA. LaGro has started every match for the Owls this season while working toward a 3.85 GPA as a kinesiology major. LaGro also earned a spot on the all-conference second team for her defensive play.

Juniors Sarah Vinson of Marshall and Caitlin Leumas of Southern Miss also earned a nod to the academic first team with perfect 4.00 grade point averages. Both are repeat selections to the first team. Vinson is a pre-dietetics major, while Leumas has has been a three-year letterwinner for the Golden Eagles' back line while maintaining that perfect grade point average as a kinesiotherapy major.

UCF junior forward Tishia Jewell was an all-conference first team selection and was also voted to the all-academic first team. Jewell earned her undergraduate degree in psychology in just two seasons while earning 2010 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year honors. While working on her master's degree in non-profit management, Jewell led the league in assists for the second year in a row.

Colorado College senior midfielder and team co-captain Kelsey Wise maintains a 3.79 GPA in biology. Tulsa junior Claire Hulcer earns all-academic honors this year with a 3.93 GPA as a marketing major. Hulcer was also named to the All-Conference second team, starting every match for a TU defense that registered 11 shutouts on the season.

UAB senior defender Pascale Pinard rounds out the first team with a 3.92 GPA in exercise science. A 2010 All-Academic second-team selection, she is a three-time Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and Academic Medal recipient.

The 2011 Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship resumes Friday at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn. The first semifinal match between Rice and UTEP starts at 5 p.m. CDT, followed by the other semifinal featuring East Carolina and host Memphis. The championship final will be on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. CST and will be televised live on CBS Sports Network. A complete list of the All-Academic winners follows:
