Rice freshman forward Lauren Hughes and East Carolina junior goalkeeper Christiane Cordero were named C-USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Hughes scored a pair of goals over the weekend, including the game-winner over defending C-USA champion Memphis. Cordero earns her third honor in four weeks as she registered a pair of shutouts, playing double-overtime minutes against SMU and Tulsa.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
LAUREN HUGHES, RICE
Freshman, F, Ottawa, Ontario
Hughes had a pair of goals in the Owls' undefeated 2-0-0 weekend. The true freshman played 155 minutes and took a combined total of a team-high nine shots in the two matches, including seven on goal for a .778 shots-on-goal percentage. She scored the game-winning goal in Thursday's nationally-televised game against Memphis, and followed that up with a goal in the fourth minute of the game Sunday on the road at UAB. Hughes has eight goals in her freshman season and shares the team lead in C-USA goals with five in seven league games. This is Hughes' first C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honor for her career.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CHRISTIANE CORDERO, EAST CAROLINA
Junior, GK, Valencia, Calif.
Cordero picked up two more shutouts on the weekend, pushing her season total to nine (career-best) and posting five clean sheets in a row (second-longest streak in ECU history). She tallied 12 saves on the weekend, playing 220 minutes in the box and recorded her eighth and ninth shutouts of the year to lead Conference USA. Against SMU, she stopped all six shots faced in a scoreless double-overtime tie and followed that with another six-save performance against Tulsa in the Pirates' third-straight scoreless draw of the season. In eight league games, she has allowed just two goals (both to Memphis) and has posted seven shutouts with 50 saves and an impressive 0.23 GAA. This is the third Defensive Player of the Week honor for the season and her career.
