C-USA WOMEN'S SOCCER SHOOTING STARS (Friday, Sept. 25)
Conference USA play opened tonight. The home team won five of six matches, as No. 22 UCF, East Carolina and Marshall all remain undefeated at home. Memphis was the lone road team earning a victory.
For the third time this year, UCF senior Courtney Whidden (Palm Harbor, Fla.) collected the game-winner as the forward scored twice to help the Knights take down UAB, 3-1, and improve to a 4-0-0 mark at home. It was Whidden's second game this year she tallied two goals, giving her six for the 2009 campaign. She now has 28 career goals, moving her into 11th place on UCF's all-time list. With 12 career game-winners, she moved into a tie for second in Knights' history.
UAB senior D Danielle Blair (Scarborough, Ontario) scored the Blazers' lone goal. UAB's three losses this season have all been to Top 25 teams.
East Carolina freshman Hali Oughton (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scored the game's only goal at the 80:39 mark to lift the Pirates to a 1-0 victory over Rice. For the second consecutive contest, sophomore Amanda Malkiewicz (Forked River, N.J.) tallied the assist on the game-winning goal off a pass from a corner kick.
Marshall's Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Sarah Vinson (Amelia, Ohio) each tallied their third goals of the season in a 2-1 victory against Houston. Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.), who entered the weekend ranked eighth nationally in assists per game, registered her fifth assist in as many games. She also tallied a game-high six shots.
Houston's Lauri Byrne (Southlake, Texas) got one goal back for the Cougars as she scored her first goal of the season off a long pass from Ryan Bruz (Scottsdale, Ariz.). GK Lauren Frazier (Round Rock, Texas) tallied six saves on the night.
Colorado College senior MF Kelly LaVoie (Round Rock, Texas) struck for a pair of goals just 84 seconds apart in the opening five minutes of play, and junior Tiffany Brown (Sterling, Va.) clicked twice in the second half, propelling the Tigers to a 4-1 triumph over SMU.
SMU freshman Ryanne Lewis (Sachse, Texas) scored at the 16:59 mark, heading in a corner kick by Logan May (Coppell, Texas) for her first career goal.
UTEP seniors Tameka Sumter (San Antonio, Texas) and reigning C-USA Offensive Player of the Week Chelsea Winbush (Allen, Texas) both scored for the Miners in a 2-1 win against Tulsa.
After a scoreless first half, Memphis opened the second half with a goal in the 51st minute as junior Ashley Berra (Cordova, Tenn.) hit from about 25 yards straight out. The Tigers were able to strike again just under four minutes later in the 55th minute as Berra connected with a cross that freshman Taylor Isenhower (Lenexa, Kan.) finished from inside the box.
It was the 100th career victory for Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan.
Another full slate of Conference USA action takes place Sunday, including a match between defending champion Memphis at No. 22 UCF. Both teams represented C-USA in the 2008 NCAA Championship and Sunday's match will be televised by CBS College Sports Network to be shown on Tuesday.
