ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - One member of the women's soccer 2012 recruiting class will represent the Black and Gold as well as Germany when she begins group play in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Defender Sophie Howard will suit up as a member of the reigning champion Germany on Monday against China at 6 a.m. EDT.
Germany is guaranteed to play in at least two more games. The team will measure up against Ghana (Aug. 23) and the United States (Aug. 27) looking for a berth to the quarterfinals.
The 16-team tournament began Friday and will conclude with the championship final on Sept. 8 in Tokyo.
Howard, who holds passports for both Germany and the United Kingdom, was dubbed the MVP of the German U19 DFB (German Soccer Federation) Tournament this year. This marks Howard's first appearance at a FIFA tournament.
