IRVING, Texas - Defending Eastern Division champion Charlotte has been selected the 2014 Conference USA women's soccer preseason favorite by the league's coaches. Reigning C-USA Offensive Player of the Year Rachel Holden of North Texas and 49ers defender Monica Trickett have been voted the Preseason Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively.

Trickett anchored a Charlotte defense that held its opponents to eight shutouts last season, including four in league play. Senior midfielder Amanda Jonesjoins Trickett on the preseason team. Jones notched 23 total points on 10 goals and three assists en route to earning an NSCAA All-Central Regional second team accolades.

The 2013 C-USA Freshman of the Year, Holden scored 12 goals, including four game-winners, and dished two assists for an impressive 26 points in her debut season. Holden was a part of a high-powered Mean Green attack that produced the most goals (52) and points (144) in the conference during the 2013 campaign. North Texas was tapped to finish second by the league coaches.

Rice claimed the third-place slot in the standings but totaled a league-best three players on the All-Conference preseason team with forward duo Holly Hargreaves and Lauren Hughes joining versatile senior Quinny Truong. An NSCAA All-Central Region third team selection, Hughes tied for a conference-high 15 points in league play, netting five goals and five assists. Hargreaves chipped in nine goals and Truong assisted on four Owls' tallies as both were named to the NSCAA All-Central Region second team. All three were named First-Team All-C-USA.

FIU was picked to finish fourth, followed by UTEP in the fifth spot. Both squads were represented by a player as Panther senior forward Ashleigh Shim and Miner redshirt-sophomore midfielder Aleah Davismade the list. Shim, a 2013 Second-Team All-C-USA selection, netted a team-high eight goals and 17 points a year ago. Davis earned spots on the NSCAA All-Central Region and All-C-USA third teams.


 

 

Florida Atlantic boasts a pair of all-conference players in redshirt-senior defender Olivia MBala and junior midfielder Claire Emslie. A First-Team All-C-USA selection, MBala led a defensive unit that led C-USA with a 0.65 goals-against average in league games. Emslie recorded a team-high 15 points and seven goals.

Rounding out the preseason team is the UTSA sophomore goalkeeper Emma Makela. The Second-Team All-Conference and All-Freshman keeper tied for second with five shutouts in conference play.

The top eight teams at the conclusion of the regular season will earn a spot in the 2014 Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship, hosted by Charlotte at Transamerica Field Nov. 5-9. The league's 20th season kicks off Friday, Aug. 22.
