CORVALLIS, Ore.--The UAB women's soccer team started strong in their first match of the season, but ultimately came out with the loss after Oregon State hit a late goal to go up 1-0 in the 88th minute Friday night at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis, Ore.

"It really was a great game," said head coach Harold Warren. "The girls did a great job, moved the ball well, and were technically and tactically sound. This is a very good Oregon State team, and we held on for most of the game until they got the goal off that late corner kick."

On the night, UAB (0-1-0) made seven shot attempts, three on goal, kicked off by junior defender Sam Bradford's try in the 11th minute.

In her first collegiate appearance, freshman keeper Courtnie Northern made three saves, all in the second half, along with the lone goal against.

"Courtnie did great tonight," Warren continued. "She directed well, and was strong in the corners. For her first collegiate game, against a quality team that consistently makes the NCAA Tournament, I'm very happy with her performance."

Junior defender Amy Harrison, redshirt sophomore Kelsey Waechter, and freshman forward Isabel Shanetau each earned starts in their debut for the Green and Gold. Freshmen midfielders Hannah Coffin and Paige Hoffman also made their first collegiate appearances as relief.

With nine seconds remaining in the match, Shanteau attempted hit the equalizer, but Oregon State (1-0-0) keeper Audrey Bernier-Larose made the save.

"Isabel weaved her way through the defense and went one-on-one with the keeper, who made the save," Warren said. "We had a few situations like that tonight where we weren't able to capitalize, but I'm pleased at how well we handled a team with a defense that is extremely tough to break."

The Beavers also had a narrow edge on corner kicks, leading the Blazers 2-1.

Up next, UAB travels to Eugene, Ore. to face Oregon on Sunday, with the match scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. CT. Live stats will be available through the Oregon website, linked here.
