May 10, 2012
IRVING, TEXAS - The 2012 Conference USA Women's Rowing Championship will be held Saturday, May 12, at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
This is the third annual C-USA Rowing Championship, but the second as a stand-alone event as the first year was held in conjunction with the Aramark South/Central Region Sprints. Preliminary heats, beginning with Varsity 8 races, are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. EDT Saturday on the 2,000-meter course. C-USA will determine the team champion based on placement in Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four races. Team and individual awards will be presented at a ceremony following the regatta.
Conference USA has three full-time members that sponsor women's rowing: SMU, Tulsa and UCF. Six additional programs serve as affiliate members in the league: Alabama, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Host Tennessee won the team title in 2010 and was runner-up last season to 2011 team champion Texas.
Defending champion Texas and host Tennessee enter the weekend ranked No. 3 and No. 6, respectively, in the NCAA South Region. The Longhorns are also ranked in the First Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity Four, with the Second Varsity the No. 2 crew in the South. Oklahoma's First and Second Varsity 8 are both slotted at No. 5 in the region, while UCF's Varsity 4 is ranked the No. 3 boat in the South.
