IRVING, Texas – UAB senior Wilson McDonald and Marshall senior Brian Anania have been named Conference USA Co-Men’s Golfer of the Week after claiming individual medalist honors last week. McDonald won the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate while Anania was victorious at the Bearcat Invitational. Middle Tennessee sophomore Avery George was the individual winner at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate and is the Women’s Golfer of the Week.
C-USA Co-Men’s Golfer of the Week – Wilson McDonald, UAB, Sr., Mobile, Ala.
McDonald shot an 8-under 202 to claim individual medalist honors at the 2013 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The tournament field boasted eight teams that are ranked or received votes in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll. The Mobile, Ala. native got off to a great start, firing a personal-best 5-under 65 in the opening round. McDonald then shot a 3-under 67 in the second round and closed out the victory with an even-par 70 in the final round.McDonald owns a 69.0 stroke average for the 2013-14 season. In addition, he has finished in the top 10 of every event he has competed in. The honor is the first for McDonald’s career.
C-USA Co-Men’s Golfer of the Week – Brian Anania, Marshall, Sr., Hurricane, W.Va.
Anania claimed the individual title at the Bearcat Invitational with a 6-under 210. The senior earned his first tournament win of his collegiate career with progressively lower scores. Anania climbed the leaderboard day-by-day, shooting an even-par 72, 2-under 70 and then a career-best-tying 4-under 68 during the final round. The 4-under tally was good enough to put Anania one-stroke ahead of the pack and help Marshall to a second-place team finish, its third top-two finish for the season. This is Anania’s first Golfer of the Week award for his career.
C-USA Women’s Golfer of the Week – Avery George, Middle Tennessee, So., Cleveland, Tenn.
George topped the 90-player field at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, finishing as the only player under-par with a winning score of 1-under 215 at the 6,004-yard 72-par course in Greenville, N.C. The sophomore fired a low of 67 during the second round, a 75 in the first round of 18 and 73 during the final round. George helped the Blue Raiders to a second-place finish in the 16-team field and pacing the squad to a total of 901 (309-289-303). Middle Tennessee recorded its lowest round of the season during the second round (289) and George's 67 was the best round for any Blue Raider this season. The award is the first Golfer of the Week honor for George’s career.
