GULF SHORES, Ala. – The University of Tulsa led from start to finish and claimed the 2012 Conference USA Women’s Golf Championship title Wednesday at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Ala. The No. 33 Golden Hurricane posted a three-round total of 884 (299-291-294) to win by 13 strokes. Tulane junior Maribel Lopez Porras won the individual championship.

All five Tulsa golfers finished among the top 13 individuals, including two in the top five and three in the top 10. Marita Engzelius was the top finisher for the Golden Hurricane, finishing in a tie for third place overall. Engelius’ teammate Kristina Merkle was the fifth-place finisher and Kamryn Ruffin ended the week tied for seventh. Sarah Elliot nearly gave Tulsa three top-10 finishers, claiming 11^th and Anna Young completed play tied for 13^th. The championship is the second C-USA title for Tulsa. The previous title came in 2008.

No. 38 UCF was the runner-up, moving up one spot in the team race after posting a 298 during the final round. All-Tournament selection freshman Katie Mitchell was the top finisher for the Knights, carding a final round 74 to tie for third. Another UCF freshman, Monifa Sealy, made it two in the top 10 with her sixth place finish.

No. 32 Tulane finished the championship in third place, four shots behind UCF. Lopez Porras was the only golf to finish the event at even par and the only golfer to post a final round score under par. She is the seventh titlist and sixth different Tulane player to claim the C-USA medal and third in four years.

The top five individual finishers -- Maribel Lopez Porras of Tulane, Felicia Espericueta of SMU, Marita Engzelius of Tulsa, Katie Mitchell of UCF and Kristina Merkle of Tulsa -- were named to the all-tournament team.

Tulsa receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. Complete team and individual qualifiers, as well as site of regional play, will be announced early next month.
