IRVING, Texas - UTEP and Rice picked up home victories Friday night while SMU suffered a road loss as part of the Surf `N Slam Classic in San Diego.

Anete Steinberga scored a season-high 23 points, Kayla Thornton added 17 and Chrishauna Parker posted 15 points and had a career best 14 rebounds to help UTEP soar past Sam Houston State, 85-66, at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners improve to 11-1 on the season, equaling the 2006-07 squad for best record through 12 games in program history. That team surged out at 14-1 before finishing at 22-8 to secure the first 20-win season at the school. The team also moves to 8-0 at home on the year, and are 90-18 in El Paso since 06-07.

Rice extended its winning streak to five games as the Owls downed UTPA 75-54 at Tudor Fieldhouse. Junior forward Jessica Kuster led the Owls with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and 34th of her career. The Owls used a 14-0 run early in the first half to take an 18-8 advantage and maintained the 10-point spread going into to halftime at 38-28.The Owls maintained that advantage through the second half to eventually beat UTPA (5-8) by 21. The Owls (7-4) posted their seventh win of the non-conference season, which ties for the most non-conference wins since 2000-01, when the Owls went 8-4 in the non-conference season. Rice is 6-1 at Tudor Fieldhouse in 2012-13, and 11-3 at home in the calendar year of 2012. The Owls only home loss this season came to No. 3 Baylor.

Junior forward Keena Mays scored a game-high 26 points and junior Akil Simpson added 20 points with eight rebounds for the Mustangs but Diego State grabbed an 88-72 win in the first round of the Surf `N Slam Classic in San Diego. Mays went 7-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, to eclipse 20 points for the third time in four games, and Simpson went 8-of-16 to reach double figures for the third straight game with a season high. Alisha Filmore added 11 to give SMU three players with at least 10 points.
