Ashley Clarke was one of five East Carolina players in double figures, netting 13 points to go along with a career-best 10 assists while recording her first career double-double in the team's 88-85 victory over VCU at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates (7-0) built a 20 point lead in the second half, but came away with a three-point victory.
East Carolina produced its 21st home win in its last 26 tries and its 16th non-conference triumph contest in 20 attempts. The Lady Pirates have also defeated four 2009 postseason qualifiers in their first seven games this year - Charlotte (NCAA), Western Carolina (NCAA), American (WNIT) and VCU (NCAA).
With the win, head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener matches Catherine Bolton as the winningest coach in program history, and can set the record with a win at Gardner-Webb Saturday. She now owns 110 victories here.
UCF (2-1) rolled to an 84-67 win over Jacksonville (1-5) behind 23 points and 14 rebounds from junior Emma Cannon and a career-high 21 from sophomore Aisha Patrick. In head coach Joi Williams return to her hometown she is now 3-0 against Jacksonville in her three seasons at the helm at UCF.
Christine Elliott posted her first double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, to lead SMU (6-1) to an 80-58 win over North Texas. Haley Day scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Raquel Christian scored 10 points.
Senior Pauline Love led Southern Miss with 14 points and 10 rebounds followed by Robin Murphy with 12 points but it wasn't enough as Mississippi State defeated Southern Miss (3-4), 85-52, Wednesday night.
Four Marshall players finished in double figures as the Thundering Herd earned a 75-61 win over Cleveland State at the Wolstein Center. Alyssa Hammond led the team (3-4) with 21 points while Chantelle Handy notched 17. Tynikki Crook finished with 16 as Mystee Dale chipped in a career-best 13.
