IRVING, Texas - UAB and Houston collected a pair of victories Tuesday night as the Blazers defeated High Point and UH downed state foe UTSA. Rice hosted and lost to No. 3 Baylor.
Junior forward Karisma Chapman scored a game-high 17 for the winning UAB, 58-53, as the team forced a season-high 26 turnovers at the Millis Center.
The Blazers, now 7-1 on the year, held off a 9-0 Panther rally in the final 10 minutes to pick up the victory after building as much as an eight-point advantage in the first half.
Houston held UTSA to a 28-percent shooting effort in a 55-42 victory at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars (3-4) won their third-straight contest. Junior forward Yasmeen Thompson registered her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go with three blocks in 37 minutes. Thompson, who entered teh game leading the nation in field-goal percentage, went 4-of-6 from the field.
Senior point guard Porsche Landry scored in double figures for the seventh time this season with 12 points to go with a season-best five steals and five rebounds, while junior forward Marissa Ashton also tallied 12 points and six boards in 21 minutes.
Brittney Griner scored a season-high 35 points and third-ranked Baylor cruised to an 89-49 victory over Rice.
Playing a college basketball game in her hometown of Houston for the first time, Griner received a standing ovation from the Tudor Fieldhouse record crowd of 2,318 when she was announced before the game. The 6-foot-8 senior added nine rebounds and four blocks as Baylor (6-1) raced to a 46-17 halftime lead and never looked back.
Jessica Kuster scored 18 points and picked up 13 rebounds for Rice (2-4) in the loss. Kuster posted the 30th double-double of her career. Christal Porter scored 11 points and Zoe Rogers had her third career double-digit scoring game with 10 points.
