Tulsa Women's Basketball Team Opens Season at Oral Roberts

Nov. 7, 2012

Tulsa, Okla. -

The Tulsa women's basketball team will open up the 2012-13 season against cross-town rival Oral Roberts on Friday, Nov. 9th. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Mabee Center on the ORU campus.

"I think last year I was a little surprised by how much this game meant to our team until we played the game," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "It is exciting to me, because when you have a rivalry it should mean something to your players. I hope that our upperclassmen have conveyed how much this game means to them, so that our freshmen can help support what we've done here in the last two years."

TU recorded an 88-50 win over Rogers State and an 83-50 victory over Mid-America Christian for an 85.5 points per game average in exhibition play. TU shot 50.3-percent from the field, 44.7-percent from three-point range and 64.5-percent from the charity stripe, and averaged 41.0 rebounds, 20.0 assists, 18.5 steals and 4.0 blocks per game in the two preseason contests.

"I think the two exhibition games have given us more excitement and enthusiasm than where we were this time last year," Mossman said. "We are excited to open up the season like everyone else is, but I think we have an even better feeling about it now that we are through the two exhibition games and have seen as many good things as we've seen from our group."

Senior Taleya Mayberry had a team-leading 23.5 ppg, while junior Loren McDaniel and senior Tiffani Couisnard added 11.5 and 10.5 ppg, respectively. Freshman Ashley Clark added 9.0 ppg and classmate Kelsee Grovey had 8.0 ppg to round out the projected starting lineup. Couisnard and McDaniel both averaged over 10.0 rebounds per game, and Mayberry added 6.5 assists and 4.5 steals per game.

Oral Roberts is under the direction of first-year head coach Misti Cussen, the wife of TU women's soccer head coach Kyle Cussen. Misti has spent the last 16 years as the top assistant for the ORU women's basketball program. The Golden Eagles return two starters from last year's team, including Jaci Bigham and Kevi Luper, and five other letterwinners. Luper averaged a team-best 23.8 points per game, while Luper and Bernadett Balla are the returning rebounding leaders with 3.8 rebounds per game.

This will be the 36th meeting between the two teams as the Golden Eagles have a 28-7 lead in the all-time series. It was the Golden Hurricane, however, that has won the last two meetings to capture the Mayor's Cup.
