Memphis to Open 2012-13 Season in Preseason WNIT

MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis women's basketball team will open its 2012-13 season by participating in the Preseason WNIT tournament it was announced by tournament organizers, Tuesday. Memphis will be joined in the 16-team tournament field by Davidson, Delaware, Duquesne, Georgetown, Grambling State, Illinois State, Iowa, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Middle Tennessee, Morehead State, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, Sacred Heart and Sam Houston State.
Of the teams in this year's Preseason WNIT, Delaware, Georgetown, Iowa, Liberty, Middle Tennessee, Sacred Heart were NCAA tournament teams last season, while Davidson, Duquesne, Illinois State and Memphis made appearances in the post season WNIT.
This marks just the second time in the WNIT's history that the Memphis Tigers have been included in the Preseason field. The Tigers participated in the second Preseason WNIT field in 1995, losing, 89-81, to Drake.
The Preseason WNIT features a three-game guarantee format. The event opens on November 9th with first round games. Second round games will be played November 11th. Semifinal games will then be played either November 14th or 15th and the championship is set for Sunday, November 18th. Teams that lose in the first two rounds will play consolation games on the second weekend, Nov. 16-17th. All games are hosted by participating schools.
In last year's Preseason WNIT, No. 1 Baylor defeated No. 2 Notre Dame in an eventual preview of the national championship game.
The complete bracket will be released on Tuesday, July 17th. Memphis returns six letterwinners from last year's third straight 20-plus win team. Highlighted by second team All-C-USA forward Nicole Dickson, the squad will gain eight new faces for the upcoming 2012-13 season.
