Feb. 4 C-USA Women's Basketball Players of the Week

IRVING, Texas - Junior KEENA MAYS picks up her third Conference USA Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor after guiding the Mustangs to a pair of league victories over Houston and at UTEP. SMU now owns an eight-game winning streak and sports a flawless 7-0 record in conference play. Mays averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 4.5 steals per game, plus produced a solid 3.3 assist/turnover ratio.

ALECIA SMITH of Houston picks up her first C-USA Freshman of the Week honor after solid performances against SMU and Tulane. She averaged 17.5 points while shooting 48 percent (12-of-25) from the field and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the 3-point line. She scored 23 points against Tulane with the assistance of a career-best seven 3-pointers.

Mays ended the weekend averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 4.5 steals per game, plus produced a solid 3.3 assist/turnover ratio in SMU's victories over UTEP and Houston. The Mansfield, Texas, native shot 80 percent from the free throw line, hitting 8-of-10 attempts, and connected on 39.4 percent from the field (13-of-33). She had game highs of 26 points, seven assists and five steals in an 82-73 win at UTEP Sunday. The scoring performance marked the seventh time in 12 games Mays has scored 20 or more points. Mays was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line, shot 50 percent from the field (9-18) and held a 57.1 accuracy from beyond the arc, hitting 4-of-7 attempts. Mays led the Mustangs to a 58-54 come-from-behind victory against Houston by scoring six points in last 1:11 and being a part of the defensive pressure that forced Houston into four turnovers in the final 45 seconds of play. She ended the game with 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Mays averages 20.2 points per game, 2.9 3-pointers per game and shots 43.8 percent from long range, all figures that would lead Conference USA if she met the 75 percent of the team's games played. This is her third Player of the Week honor.

ALECIA SMITH, HOUSTON
5-7, GUARD / CEDAR HILL, TEXAS / CEDAR HILL HS

Smith averaged 17.5 points while shooting 48 percent (12-of-25) from the field and connecting on 7-of-15 3-pointers last week against league leaders SMU and Tulane. She returned home to Dallas to face undefeated SMU Thursday, scoring in double figures for the first time in five games with 12 points off a 5-of-12 effort from the field to go with five rebounds and three assists. Smith converted a pair of free throws and followed with a jumper on the next possession to give Houston a four-point lead with just over three minutes remaining. The Cedar Hill, Texas, native followed up with a 23-point performance against Tulane Saturday. Smith connected on a career-best seven 3-pointers on 11 attempts. She went 6-of-9 from distance with 20 points, while draining four trifectas in just over three minutes in the second half. The seven 3-pointers were the most by a Cougar since Brittney Scott went 7-of-11 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Dec. 5, 2010. Smith has drained a team-best 28 3-pointers this season at a 32 percent clip and has scored in double figures in six contests. This is Houston's second consecutive Freshman of the Week honor and marks the first for Smith's career.
