Feb. 1, 2013
IRVING, Texas - UAB's Amber Jones was voted to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District Women's Basketball Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
It is the first such honor for Jones, who boasts a 3.67 cumulative grade point average in exercise science. She is set to graduate in May and plans on attending physical therapy school at UAB. The Town Creek, Ala., native leads the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game. She is one of 25 Blazers to net more than 1,000 career points (1,368) and was an All-Conference USA performer last season.
Also earning All-District First Team honors are future C-USA members Jerica Coley of FIU and Old Dominion's Mairi Buchan.
Coley, an All-America candidate, is currently the NCAA leading scorer with 24.4 points per game. The junior sports a 3.34 GPA in dietetics and nutrition. Coley has scored in double-figures in 19 of 20 games this season and has registered 12, 20-plus point outings and eight, 30-plus point performances in 2012-13.
Buchan is a senior biology (pre-med) major with a 3.93 GPA. This is her second consecutive appearance on an All-District team. A native of Stirlingshire, Scotland, Buchan is averaging 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds this season to go along with 38 assists, 16 blocks and 11 steals.
Both FIU and ODU are set to become members of C-USA in July 2013.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team selections will be announced later this month.
The Academic All-District ® teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
