COLLEGE STATION, Texas - In the first meeting between the two teams, Marshall lost to Marquette ,67-46,  to open up the A&M Classic on Friday afternoon.

The Thundering Herd dropped to 2-2 on the young season, while Marquette improved to 2-1.

Despite holding a plus-12.3 rebounding margin on the season, Marshall was out-rebounded by the Golden Eagles, 51-36. The difference led to 20 second chance points for Marquette.

"We were undersized in every position, except the center, by at least three inches," said head coach Matt Daniel. "Their system is experienced and ours isn't. We were out of position because we would help the helper and do different stuff. With that being said, it's just experience - bottom line."

Foul trouble haunted Marshall as the Thundering Herd sent Marquette to the free throw line 18 times and the Golden Eagles added 12 points from the stripe. Contrarily, Marshall only visited the free throw line twice and missed both attempts.

"We only fouled them twelve times and they only shot 18 free throws, but we fouled on scoring plays," Daniel said.

Chukwuka Ezeigbo led Marshall, earning her second double-double in of the season, totaling 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also added a team-high two blocks and two steals.

Freshman Norrisha Victrum also netted 10 points, going 4-for-9 from the field and 2-2 in three-pointers.

Shay Weaver and Orlandria Williams each combined for eight points each, both making two three-pointers in the match-up.

Marquette was led by junior forward Katherine Plouffe, who totaled 16 points after shooting 7-of-13 from the field. She added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Junior guard Katie Young also earned a double-double, recording 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Marshall went 5-for-8 from the field to open the game, tying the Golden Eagles 11-11 in the opening seven minutes of the game.

Marquette benefited from an 8-0 run to pull ahead of Marshall 19-11 and used 11 offensive rebounds in the half to extend its lead to 34-26 at the end of the half.

The Herd pulled the game within five to open up the second half, using a three-pointer from Victrum to make the score 38-33.

Marshall was unable to pull the game any closer as Marquette used a deep roster to keep the Herd offense at bay. The Golden Eagles had nine different players score in the contest to help defeat Marshall 67-46.

The Herd will return to Reed Arena in College Station, Texas to take on Southern University in the final game of the Classic on Sunday at 12 p.m.ET.
