East Carolina cruised to an 84-41 victory over St. Andrew's in a team effort on Sunday evening at Minges Coliseum. As a team ECU registered 20 steals which is good for third in the East Carolina single-game record book, while notching nine blocks to rank fourth in the annals.
With the win, East Carolina moves to 2-0 on the year, while St. Andrew's falls to 1-2. The Pirates converted 30 field goals in the contest and shot 77.8-percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Knights shot 25.4-percent from the field and 21.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Junior Katie Paschal was the Pirates' leading scorer, while Elise Shelton grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Paschal came off the bench for the Pirates and tallied 17 minutes of action in which she notched 11 points, two rebounds, a pair of assists, two steals and a block. Tatiana Chapple, Celeste Stewart, and Britny Edwards chipped in eight points each, while Whitny Edwards and Shelton added seven. Kyani White was the team leader in steals for the second game in a row as she tallied four, while Stewart led the squad in assists (4).
Memphis suffered its first loss of the season in the second round of the Preseason WNIT. The Tigers dropped a tough 82-68 game at Middle Tennessee. Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir tied a career-high, leading Memphis with 16 points on her birthday. Ariel Hearn added a career-best 13 points, while Nicole Dickson (11) and Mooriah Rowser (10) each added double-digits. Dickson led the Tigers with five rebounds, while Abdul-Qaadir added four steals. Memphis will face Illinois State in the consolation game. The day and location of that game will be announced later Sunday night.
UCF dropped a 72-54 game to No. 13 St. John's at the Ocean Center. Freshman Briahanna Jackson netted 10 points of a 12-0 run, but missed layups earlier in the game came back to haunt the Knights as the deficit was too large to overcome. Jackson finished just shy of a double-double with team highs in points (20) and rebounds (9).
