IRVING, Texas - The University of Houston became the first C-USA squad to collect its 20th victory this season as the Cougars defeated East Carolina, 77-60, on ESPN2 Sunday in Hofheinz Pavilion. Rice regrouped after a mid-week setback and notched a 71-58 road win over Memphis, who had previous won four straight. UTEP ended its three-game losing streak as the Miners held on for a 65-61 win over Tulane in El Paso.

SMU, UAB and UCF all cruised to easy C-USA wins. SMU defeated Tulsa, 66-58, and UAB knocked off Southern Miss, 74-45. The Knights went into Cam Henderson Center and took a 71-59 game from Marshall.

The Memphis loss and wins by UCF and Rice created a three-way tie for second place behind conference-leading Houston. Tulane and SMU follow at 6-5, while three teams (ECU, UAB, UTEP) are knotted up at 5-6 in the league standings.

The Conference USA Women¡¦s Basketball Championship is set to take place from Wednesday, March 9 through Saturday, March 12 in Memorial Gym and the Don Haskins Center on UTEP¡¦s campus.

C-USA SHOOTING STARS
>>> Guard Brittney Scott led a quartet of double-digit scorers for Houston (20-4, 11-0 C-USA) as the senior wrapped up the day with 20 points. Senior F Lesslee Mason registered her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards in only 23 minutes of action. Junior PG Porsche Landry added 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes.

>>> Senior G Allison Spivey became the 21st player in East Carolina (11-13, 5-6 C-USA) history to score 1,000 career points as the Pirates fell to first-place Houston. Junior G Ashley Clarke netted a double-double in the game, scoring 11 points while corralling 12 rebounds. Senior F Kim Gay also scored in double figures with 11.

 

 

>>> A trio of UAB players scored double figures, led by senior G Amanda Peterson's 20, as the Blazers rolled over Southern Miss. Junior G LaShaunda Pratt added 18 points, while sophomore G Amber Jones chipped in 17 points, three assists and four steals. The Blazers (13-11, 5-6 C-USA) finished the game shooting at a 49 percent clip, their best performance of the season, including hitting 56 percent of their shots from beyond the arc and scoring 30 points in the paint.

>>> Senior F Tanesha Washington posted a double-double to lead Southern Miss with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Freshman G Jamierra Faulkner also scored double figures with 11 points.

>>> Tulane senior PG Roshaunda Barnes had 18 points and five assists against UTEP at the Don Haskins Center.With the loss, Tulane (17-7, 6-5 C-USA) suffers its third straight and fifth in the last seven games. Senior F Tiffany Aidoo tallied 10 points on the strength of three 3-pointers. Senior G Danielle Nunn led the Green Wave with five rebounds and added nine points.

>>> Junior F Gloria Brown came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points and pull down a game-best 17 rebounds in the team¡¦s win over Tulane. Senior Ashley Milian flirted with a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds, while freshman G Kelli Willingham had 13 points and dished out six assists. UTEP (13-10, 5-6 C-USA) control the boards, 44-31, and shared the ball effectively with 16 assists, but more importantly committed a season-low tying 12 turnovers.

>>> Memphis junior P Jasmine Lee finished the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Junior G Brittany Carter, who entered the game needing 15 points for 1,000 in her Tiger career, finished with 11.

>>> Junior F Brianna Hypolite led three Rice players in double-digit scoring with 18 points inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Rice (15-10, 7-4) wins its first game of the season after being behind at the half. Also in double-digit scoring for the Owls were freshman F Jessica Kuster with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Senior F Morgan Mayse also scored 15 points.

>>> Junior F Christine Elliott posted her second double-double of the season to lead SMU (13-11, 6-5 C-USA) to victory over Tulsa Sunday. SMU completed the season sweep of the Golden Hurricane (5-14, 1-10 C-USA). Elliott went 6-of-10 from the field for 15 points and 13 rebounds for her 12th-career double-double, but it was Haley Day who led the Mustangs in scoring. The senior was 6-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, for a team-high 16 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Senior F Delisha Wills finished with 15 points, and junior G Samantha Mahnesmith added 11 to give SMU four players in double figures.

>>> Tulsa Sophomore G Taleya Mayberry led all scorers with 24 points at SMU. Freshman F Loren McDaniel and Chanice Scott also posted double-digit points for Tulsa (5-14, 1-10 C-USA). McDaniel added 11 points and also had seven rebounds, while Scott had 10 points. >>> Senior Chelsie Wiley led UCF (14-10, 7-4 C-USA) with a game-high 19 points, while fellow senior G D¡¦Nay Daniels had a double-double of 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Daniels¡¦ 10th rebound came with 1:28 remaining in the game to earn her team-leading sixth double-double of the season.

>>> Marshall senior F Tynikki Crook grabbed her 11th double-double of the season, pouring in 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds, four assists and four blocks against the Knights Sunday. Crook took sole possession of fourth place all-time in Herd rebounding with 819 in her career, surpassing Tammy Wiggins (1983-87). Rashedah Henriques shot four-of-six from the floor to chip in 13 points for the Herd (6-18, 2-9 C-USA) while Alaya Mitchell added 12 points on the afternoon.
