Player Profile

Hometown:
Memphis, Tenn.

College:
UAB

The first lady of UAB basketball -- Wanda Hightower Jordan -- finished her career more than 20 years ago and still holds school records that might never be broken. She scored 2,854 points, almost 1,000 more than Steve Mitchell - the men's career leader. She grabbed 1,091 rebounds and shot 51.5 percent from the field, averaging at least 23.5 points per game in each season.

Hightower came to Birmingham from Hamilton High School in Memphis, just as UAB was starting its athletic program. She played with the Lady Blazers from 1978-82. In her first season, she averaged 26.5 points and 10.1 rebounds, making an immediate impact on the program.

She went on to establish school records in virtually every category, many of which still stand. On May 17, 1982, Hightower became the first UAB athlete in any sport to have her jersey retired. Today, her number 10 hangs from the rafters of Bartow Arena.
